Reviews for the First Edition Health Physics Society Newsletter, November 1989 "This publication is a version of a similar document originally published in 1981 by the Bureau of Radiological Health. It provides an overview of the components of a linear accelerator and how they function and interrelate. Auxiliary systems to maintain and operate are also described. Much of the text refers to the Varian Clinac 18. Other machines are described in Appendix A, while specifications for many contemporary linear accelerators are given in Appendix B. "There are no physics or engineering equations, so it is not a text; however, the phenomena of electron acceleration and interaction are described very well. It is a primer, as the title states, and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to be 'linear literate.' In particular, physicians will benefit by understanding what the authors have to say."
