"This book is recommended for all hospital departments and outpatients clinics. It may be read in its entirety, but I suspect it will more often be used to solve a particular clinical problem. The contents of the book are particularly well set out to serve this second aim.

"The first edition, comprising 187 pages, was published in 1985. This second edition has been revised extensively, with new tables and illustrations and better-quality publishing features, particularly the paper. The bibliographies at the end of each chapter have been updated extensively, with current references added and older material eliminated.

"The text encompasses all of radiology, with sections on both ionizing and nonionizing radiation. Part 1, on diagnostic radiation and risks to unborn children, has chapters on the mechnisms for injury, units and measurements of radiation, the amount of radiation absorbed by the conceptus, prenatal risks from ionizing radiation, ultrasonography, magnetic fields and radio frequency waves. Part 2, dealing with the clinical management of the pregnant patient needing diagnostic study, covers preliminary considerations, assessment of risks, and the decision whether to proceed. Part 3, on the clinical evaluation of pregnant patients previously exposed to diagnostic radiation, includes initial actions, risk evaluation and the decision whether to proceed.

"I particularly liked the use of bold and italic script to highlight the essence of each section. The tables and illustrations are presented clearly.

"This book is an essential acquisition for radiologists. Residents should have read it thoroughly before their exams and should remember its existence when in practice. It is the definitive reference source."
