"This book reports the proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop on Digital Mammography (IWDM) held in 2000. Divided into sections including 'Image Acquisition,' 'Computer-Assisted Detection,' 'Quality Assurance,' 'Imaging Processing,' and 'Clinical Aspects of Digital Mammography,' this book is a compilation of the talks presented at the workshop. Each section consists of multiple related articles written by investigators who work in the field of mammography. Topics range from the pure science of the technology to patient care. This book is an excellent tool for reviewing recent experiences and data with regard to this modality. The authors represent worldwide experts on this technique. Communicating the work from this conference is valuable because the role of digital mammography continues to evolve.

"On my first glance at the book, I feared that it would be an explanation of the pure science and physics of digital mammography and, thus, be of little value to a clinical-based radiologist. As I started reading, however, I was pleased to note that even the physics sections are extremely well written, concise, and intelligible to a practicing radiologist interested in the field. This book provides an excellent description of digital mammography and would be useful to radiologists who are considering acquiring this modality for their practice. The authors provide insights about the physics and a more complete understanding of the strengths and limitations of this tool.

"Many of the articles present an investigational appraisal of digital mammography including its role in clinical trials. Given that most of the papers presented are research articles, it is important that the reader realize that with advances in the technique, some of the results will undergo further refinement and may change. Nevertheless, this book represents the works of the mammographers worldwide who are experienced with respect to digital mammography. It provides an excellent overview of the benefits and shortcomings of this technique. IWDM2000: 5th International Workshop on Digital Mammography would be useful in the libraries of practices of physicians who are thinking of acquiring a digital unit or in the libraries of practices that have a high clinical interest in the field of digital mammography."
