DESCRIPTION

This book is a compendium of papers given during the 2015 AAPM Summer School. The organizers of the summer school and hence the editors of this book selected 49 well-published and experienced scholars in the field of ion therapy to lecture during this event. These selected scholars documented their lectures through the 28 well-written chapters of this book.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the book is to provide an up-to-date information and knowhow of defined topics in proton therapy to professionals who are involved in the care of patients receiving proton radiation therapy. The chapters in the book are well written and cover the necessary physics aspects to serve as a comprehensive resource to physicists working in the field of ion therapy and more so proton therapy. The authors provided ample references to the most relevant papers and communications in the specific areas of interest.

AUDIENCE

The AAPM Summer School was organized to provide an in-depth knowledge of most aspects related to proton therapy. It was attended by clinical medical physicists who are already practicing in the field and those who are getting into proton therapy. Therefore, this book serves as a textbook in the fast-growing field of proton therapy. It will provide the required information and references to the relevant scientific literature required by medical physicists practicing in proton therapy.

CONTENT/FEATURES

The book begins with an introduction to proton therapy covering a historical overview of proton therapy and the basic physics and biological aspects of proton therapy. The chapter written by Dr. Zietman, on the practicing clinician’s perspective on proton beam therapy, covers a lot of the sociopolitical issues around proton beam therapy. It also serves as a great reminder to the practicing medical physicist that the clinical outcomes are what matters. The rest of the book covers proton beam technologies, technical aspects of delivering proton therapy, proton dosimetry as well as acceptance testing and clinical commissioning. Several chapters are dedicated to the treatment planning for historical as well as stateof- the-art beam delivery methods. A unique feature of the book is the appendix on proton beam nomenclature and terminology, which is very helpful.

ASSESSMENT/COMPARISON

This book is a well-composed compendium of papers that serves as a comprehensive textbook for Medical Physicists and other professionals practicing in the field of proton therapy. The editors selected scholars with detailed knowledge in their specific areas to cover the most important areas of proton therapy. This book is highly recommended as an essential tool in the arsenal of the proton therapy medical physicist.
